The History of St. Aloysius Church

Saint Aloysius Gonzaga Roman Catholic Church is located in Cheektowaga, New York, a suburb of Buffalo. Its history is quite detailed:

Saint Aloysius Gonzaga R.C. Church (Cheektowaga, NY):

  • Founding: The parish was founded on March 28, 1940, during Bishop John Duffy’s episcopacy. This occurred due to Buffalo’s northward expansion and suburbanization. Its initial boundaries were carved out of the territories of St. James, St. Benedict, and Christ the King parishes.
  • Early Years: The founding priest, Reverend Walter Gonter (1891-1953), celebrated Mass in a temporary frame structure for about ten months.
  • Present Church Building: The current church building was dedicated in 1941. It is located at 157 Cleveland Drive at Highview Road in Cheektowaga. The architectural style is described as Late Gothic Revival with Tudor Revival elements, designed by local architect Mortimer Murphy. Key features include narrow lancet windows, stone-capped buttresses, low parapets, and a large Gothic-arched window with dalle-de-verre and traditional stained glass.
  • Rapid Growth: The parish experienced significant growth in its early years, doubling in size to 1,800 families by 1952. This rapid growth necessitated expansions to the original building.
  • Parochial School: A parochial school was opened in 1948, staffed by the Sisters of Saint Joseph. A convent for the sisters was erected in 1962. The school served the community for many years but eventually closed in 2007 due to declining enrollment.
  • Building Expansions: To accommodate the growing congregation, new sacristies were added in 1952 and 1953, which allowed for the enlargement of the worship space.
  • Merger: In 2009, St. Aloysius Gonzaga Parish merged with the neighboring parish of Immaculate Heart of Mary. Despite the merger and the earlier school closure, St. Aloysius Gonzaga remains an active and relatively vibrant Catholic parish in Cheektowaga, serving the spiritual needs of residents in northwest Cheektowaga and northeast Buffalo.
  • Ministries and Outreach: Throughout its history, the parish has been known for its deep faith, generosity, cooperation, and focus on youth. It continues to offer various ministries and outreach programs.
  • Road to Renewal: In September 2022, St. Aloysius Parish was included in Family #33 as part of the Road to Renewal program in the Buffalo Diocese.
  • Possible Closure: The Road of Renewal program placed the parish on the diocesan close list, but a group within the parish is appealing the decision to the Vatican.
