On Sunday, February 23, 2025, the Buffalo Mass Mob will gather at St. Michael R.C. Church for noon Mass. This event marks the fifty-first Mass Mob organized by the group since its inception in 2013. The concept is straightforward: Buffalo Mass Mob selects a church and encourages the public to attend Mass in large numbers on the chosen Sunday, similar to a flash mob.
The goal of the Buffalo Mass Mob is to draw attention to churches in Buffalo that could use support and emphasize their importance in the city’s urban landscape. By participating in the Mass, the community can easily show their support for these historic churches. The initiative has gained recognition in local, national, and international media. Originally started in Buffalo, similar Mass Mob movements have emerged in other cities nationwide.
The Mass Mobs are organized through social media, and the previous fifty events have attracted thousands of attendees to various churches in Buffalo. Christopher Byrd, one of the co-founders of Buffalo Mass Mob, stated, “Buffalo Mass Mob hopes to raise awareness and appreciation for sacred sites throughout Buffalo and Western New York. We invite everyone to come and experience these treasures. As St. Michael Church is scheduled to close this year, it highlights the need to support historic churches in the area. Our Mass Mobs help boost attendance and contributions.”
St. Michael Church, established in 1851, is at 651 Washington Street, Buffalo, NY.
